Moana Live-Action

Disney surprised fans by debuting the first official teaser trailer for its highly anticipated live-action Moana film. Disney currently sets the film for a July 10, 2026, release in U.S. theaters. The trailer immediately confirmed that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is reprising his role as the demigod Maui. This first look balances breathtaking visuals with the familiar, beloved story.

First Look at Motunui and Maui

The new footage showcases sweeping ocean vistas and the majestic island of Motunui. It also features a glimpse of the adorable Kakamora tribe. While the teaser stops short of a full, close-up reveal of Johnson as Maui, it clearly shows his iconic transformation into an eagle. The trailer strongly suggests that the film will retain the emotional power of the original music, teasing a powerful new rendition of “I Am Moana.” Original songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda and composer Mark Mancina both return to contribute to the music.

Casting a New Wayfinder

The teaser introduces actress Catherine Lagaʻaia in the title role. A newcomer from Sydney with Samoan heritage, Lagaʻaia performs a line from the iconic theme song, setting the tone for the film. Her casting reinforces Disney’s commitment to authentic Polynesian representation for the project. Take a look at the new teaser-trailer below:

The ensemble cast features other talented actors of Pacific Island descent. John Tui (Auckland, New Zealand native) plays Moana’s father, Chief Tui. Frankie Adams (Samoan-New Zealander) portrays her mother, Sina. Finally, Disney cast Rena Owen (Bay of Islands, New Zealand) as Moana’s revered grandmother, Gramma Tala.

Final Production and Release Date

Thomas Kail directs the film; he is the award-winning director known for his work on Broadway’s Hamilton. Kail brings his musical theatre expertise to this cinematic reimagining. The project wrapped principal photography in November 2024, demonstrating its swift movement through production. Original Moana voice actress Auliʻi Cravalho also serves as an executive producer, ensuring the team honors the cultural integrity of the live-action story. The final theatrical release date falls on July 10, 2026.
