Buzz Lightyear star Tim Allen confirmed a major shift for Pixar’s next installment. Allen stated that Joan Cusack’s cowgirl, Jessie, is officially the new main character for Toy Story 5, calling the highly anticipated story “all about Jessie.” The fifth film’s announcement initially drew mixed reactions. Now, the return of the core cast and a fresh focus on Jessie raises excitement. Woody and Buzz will return, but the spotlight officially shifts to the rootin’-tootin’ cowgirl.

Jessie Takes the Lead Against a New Enemy

The new film will explore a crucial, timely theme: the conflict between traditional toys and modern electronics. This technological theme introduces the main disruptive force in Bonnie’s room: Lilypad. Lilypad is a high-tech, frog-shaped smart tablet. She is the major new “threat to playtime,” challenging the relevance and purpose of the classic toys. Greta Lee (Past Lives) voices this new character, setting up a clash of generations within the toy box.

Following the events of Toy Story 4, Jessie took over as the trusted leader of Bonnie’s room. Now, she faces an existential threat. Tim Allen teased that Jessie is “in trouble and she needs help.” She must “gather everybody” to solve her problem, necessitating the reunion with Woody and Buzz.

Returning Cast and the Buzz Army Subplot

The adventure will reunite the iconic trio. Tom Hanks will return as Woody, and Tim Allen will return as Buzz Lightyear. The conflict’s high stakes ensure the two original friends must “realign” to help Jessie. Woody left with Bo Peep in the previous installment, but he will return.

The fifth entry will also feature a memorable subplot. Allen revealed the opening sequence involves a plane crash. This leaves “a hundred Buzz dolls” stranded and lost, forcing Buzz to deal with an army of his hysterical duplicates. The cast additions include Conan O’Brien as the tech toy “Smarty Pants” and Ernie Hudson taking over as Combat Carl.

Toy Story 5 is scheduled for release on June 19, 2026. Director Andrew Stanton’s return ensures the film will continue to explore the core themes of identity and the changing meaning of playtime.
