The Walt Disney Company is once again shaking up the streaming world. On Tuesday, the company announced that Disney+ will announce major price increases for streaming services, including Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN. These changes are set to go into effect on October 21. This move joins other streaming giants like Netflix and Peacock in raising subscription costs this year.

Breaking Down the New Costs

The price for the ad-supported Disney+ plan will increase by $2, bringing its new monthly price to $11.99. The ad-free Disney+ Premium plan will see a $3 jump, raising its cost to $18.99 per month. Hulu’s ad-supported plan is also increasing by $2 to $11.99 a month.

In addition, many popular bundles are becoming more expensive. The ad-supported Disney+ and Hulu bundle will now cost $12.99 per month, a $2 increase from its previous price. The Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select bundle with ads is also rising from $16.99 to $19.99. The premium version of that same bundle, which includes ad-free Disney+ and Hulu, will now be $29.99, up from $26.99.

The Controversy’s Impact

The timing of these price hikes is notable. The announcement comes just after Disney faced significant backlash over its handling of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show. The company temporarily suspended the show after comments were made by the host, leading to public outrage and calls to boycott Disney’s streaming platforms. This led to a significant amount of “subscriber churn” for the company, as many viewers canceled their subscriptions in protest.

A Strategic Decision

While a Disney spokesperson stated that the price increases were planned long in advance and are unrelated to the Kimmel controversy, many sources believe the timing was carefully chosen to come after the public firestorm had died down. This strategy was likely an attempt to minimize further subscriber loss. The company is no stranger to annual price adjustments, with this being the fourth consecutive year of increases for Disney+ since its launch in 2019.

The Bigger Picture for Subscribers

For consumers, the continuous price hikes across the streaming industry mean they must now weigh whether the content is worth the rising cost. Disney is betting that its deep library of movies and shows, from Marvel to Star Wars and Pixar, will keep subscribers on board. The coming months will show if that gamble pays off and if subscribers will continue to pay a premium for their favorite content. The situation shows how media, politics, and consumer behavior are all interconnected.
