“a cat’s the only cat who knows where it’s at.” For the live-action remake of The Aristocats, it seems Disney has discovered where it’s not. The studio has reportedly cancelled the project, according to its Oscar-winning director. The 1970 animated musical comedy follows a pampered family of cats living in Paris. When a jealous butler kidnaps them to steal their inheritance, they must find their way home with the help of a streetwise alley cat and his jazzy friends.

The Director’s Confirmation

Oscar-winning director Questlove, who was attached to the project, confirmed the news. He revealed the cancellation in an interview on Score: The Podcast. He explained that Disney’s repeated leadership changes caused the project to face multiple “reshuffles.” These continuous changes ultimately led to the studio shelving the film.

Questlove directly addressed his departure from the project. He stated that after the third time Disney reshuffled the leadership, he decided the project was not meant for him. He then moved on to other film opportunities. His comments shed light on the internal struggles faced by projects within the studio system.

A Wider Disney Strategy Shift

The cancellation of The Aristocats is part of a larger trend at Disney. The studio has reportedly put other live-action remakes on hold or canceled them entirely. These projects include live-action versions of Bambi and Tangled. This strategic shift indicates a reevaluation of Disney’s approach to its extensive catalog of animated classics.

This strategic move follows a series of mixed box office results for Disney’s recent live-action remakes. While some remakes have achieved success, others have underperformed financially. Disney now appears to be prioritizing creative quality and originality over the sheer quantity of remakes.

The news brings an end to a long development cycle for The Aristocats remake. While it may disappoint some fans, it aligns with Disney’s evolving film strategy. This decision marks a new direction for the studio as it reevaluates its film pipeline.
