The wildest ride in the wilderness is about to get even wilder. Disney has confirmed that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom will reopen in 2026 after a major refurbishment. The project began in early 2025 and will bring fresh updates to both the attraction’s structure and story. Guests can also expect a brand-new scene that dives deeper into the mysteries of the mountain.

Construction Updates

Since January 2025, scaffolding has surrounded the mountain during the refurbishment. Testing equipment, including an envelope test device, has also been spotted on-site. This tool ensures that ride vehicles clear scenic elements safely before the attraction welcomes passengers again.

The Return of Rainbow Caverns

When Big Thunder Mountain reopens, riders will journey through the newly reimagined Rainbow Caverns. The scene will showcase glowing stalactites, stalagmites, and phosphorescent pools. Disney describes the area as eerily beautiful, with an ominous rumble that suggests the mountain is very much alive.

Storytelling Reinvented

The updated attraction expands on the legend of Barnabas T. Bullion, the ambitious mine owner at the heart of the story. Guests will now see more of the mine’s underbelly, with effects that highlight the risks of digging too deep. Humor, thrills, and immersive details will blend together to deliver a fresh twist on this fan-favorite ride.

Looking Ahead

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has long been a staple of Magic Kingdom. With new technology, updated visuals, and an expanded backstory, the attraction promises to feel both familiar and brand-new. Disney fans can look forward to the ride roaring back to life in 2026.
