Created by Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development, H.E.R.B.I.E. is a true feat of modern robotics. This bipedal robot glides and balances effortlessly on an eight-inch sphere. This lifelike motion is made possible by a series of internal sensors. They measure his precise movement 250 times per second. This constant feedback keeps him perfectly upright. He can then wave, dance, and interact with guests.
H.E.R.B.I.E. is also full of personality. His expressive face is made of tape reels for his eyes. Capstans form his mouth. This gives him a unique and charming look. Imagineers worked with voice actor Matthew Wood to record new phrases for him. These include conversation starters and songs like “Happy Birthday.” Look closely at his body. You will spot custom decals and stickers. They replicate details straight from the film.
A Cosmic Celebration in the Parks
The arrival of H.E.R.B.I.E. and the rest of The Fantastic Four is part of a larger celebration.
